George Dias, Sr. and unknown. San Juan Mission Fiesta Rodeo, San Juan Bautista, CA. circa unknown.
George and I started San Juan Valley Spice in 2013 and bought Gilroy Spice Company in June, 2014.
Gilroy Spice Company was founded by Gary Steinmetz about 30 years ago. He had a vision and some fantastic tasting seasoning blends and recipes. He also had a strong commitment to customer service. All of which led to a long list of loyal customers who have remained so to this day.
Gilroy Spice Company had sold to new owners a few times before we were fortunate enough to be in a position to buy the company.
Our history goes all the way back to the 1940's and in 1972 when I started my first job working for Cimino-Vessey Foods a Garlic packaging firm in Hollister, CA. Georges family was involved in the earlier days of the California Garlic industry transporting fresh Garlic and hauling planting and harvesting machinery for the Christopher Ranch.
George as a youth was a third generation volunteer on the San Juan Mission Fiesta Rodeo Bar-B-Que crew. His dad George Jr., volunteered with the crew as soon as he was old enough to help out and remained a loyal volunteer for many years. His grandfather George Sr. "Poppy" (pictured above) was on the original crew. "Poppy" (Zeke to the locals) was a master when it came to Bar-B-Que Chicken. He shared his secrets with his son and grandson and to this day his recipe is the most sought after chicken bar-b-que dry rub and marinade on the central coast. At this time it is not available to the public but I almost have my partner talked into one day sharing it with the rest of the world. In a bottle of course, not the actual recipe.
We believe that all our past experience has brought us to this point in time where we can bring it together to provide you with THE best tasting seasonings, the FINEST California grown Garlic and Olives and OUTSTANDING customer service.
Give us your business and we will give you our best.
